New Paintings – Wildfire Glass Art

Last summer, I went through the most frightening thing I have ever experienced, the California Basin Complex Wildfire that chewed through much of Big Sur.  I had seen wildfires on TV, but had never experienced one in person until then. My partner, BJ, detailed the advance of the fire in photos on his blog as it was happening. We were advised to evacuate, but as we tried

Head In The Clouds

Rain on the roof, fog on the mountain all around us. Condensed upon us last night and persisted all day. Visibility is 60 feet or less. Rains hard at times, mist and drizzle between. Cats come in soaked. Good thing I buttoned up the hot shop before hitting the sack. Fun, and usually gives a cozy feeling but in these times, it tends to feel more like being further cut off. Odd how it can change.

Back when the Big Sur Fire was raging and threatening to burn our studio to the ground, it felt really good the first time that it settled upon us. Kept the fire from advancing so quickly, due to the moisture content of the atmosphere. That fire burned for more than two months. When the clouds came, it wasn't over, by any means, but it sure was welcome and helped us to relax just a tiny bit.

Doesn’t get any cuter…

I've had a rough summer. First a huge contract got "deferred." We had already bought supplies and equipment in order to make their fast completion date. They say don't count your chickens, but this chicken had been laid, hatched, and had a pretty significant foundation of feathers... The economy hit the client hard, so the client hit us hard. ouch.

Then we had the awful fires. I had never

Fire’s “Over”, but NOT Out

6-24_plumesWell, after more than 60 days looking at the thick smoke and breathing the ash, the skies have finally cleared. I'm able to go back out without a respirator on and actually do some work! Our projects are so so far behind, it's ridiculous, but we've been working very hard on them to catch up

The California Wildfire That Burned Big Sur – Part 12

Spherical Magic & The Basin Complex Wildfire – Days 37-75

7/27/2008, 12:55 PM

Below is what happened yesterday afternoon! Erupting volcanoes and battleships on fire jump immediately to mind.

A perfect object example of:

"Contained" does not mean "Extinguished".

"Contained" only means that there is a ring of now black, mostly un-burnable material completely around the perimeter sufficiently wide that they are reasonably sure it won't jump to ignite fuel that will burn. A good, strong wind in the wrong direction could rescind that "Contained" proclamation right quick.

The California Wildfire That Burned Big Sur – Part 11

Spherical Magic & The Basin Complex Wildfire – Days 33-35

Heavy smoke again. The first Chews Ridge firing took place this afternoon. Couldn't see with all of the thick smoke out there but there didn't appear to be any slop-overs outside the dozer lines that we do know are there. Shots of it will be up tomorrow. I've gotta get some dinner.
