Pet Memorials, Art and Pet Loving Come Together

I have been a pet lover my entire life. I've never had fewer than three at any given time, usually more. When I as growing up, we had upwards of 10 dogs, 10 cats, chickens, guinea pigs, fish... For whatever reason, needy kitties seem to find me. And I help them, either to get back to their homes, or if they have no home, they find a new loving home with me.

I've also always been an artist, but only recently doing my own glassblowing. We built our own glass blowing equipment so that we could go out whenever we wanted and make some beautiful glass art right here at our studio. It was then that I realized that I could use my glass art to help myself and help others who had to deal with the tremendous heartbreak of losing a beloved pet.

Surprised by My Own Artwork

An order came in this morning. Yay! It was for an art glass marble, and those have a numbering system dependent on which date they were blown, what piece number that day and what recipe was used. A little complicated, but necessary. So I immediately went to my files to find out which marble it was so that I could go find it in the display rack.

Art Glass Paperweights of the Alien Kind

While the cold-working is progressing on the new wine stoppers and small paperweights, I thought I'd share a bit about the Great Paperweight Project. A friend of ours, Jon Ramer, has been encouraging us to get into the Art Glass Marble market for some time. A few months ago, he invested in our effort, funding the first 40 or so marbles to get things going. He has pick of ten of his choosing, but has yet to tag any.

As you may have learned by this time, I do things big. Wasn't intentional this time, as we were

Another All-Nighter

After completing a really successful glassblowing session yesterday (and, of course, dinner), I set to work customizing and linking the blog with Facebook, LinkedIn, FeedBurner and our websites; with RSS feeds, networks, etc. Convoluted and unintuitive don't quite describe it adequately enough. Found workarounds for things that didn't do what they were supposed to and finally crashed a little while after the Sun came up over the mountain tops.... again.

The blowing day was good. Some of the wine stoppers we made on Tuesday didn't survive the overnight annealing process. Looks like they may have been placed into the annealer too cold ("cold" being a relative term)

Three New Marbles

This is a wonderful paperweight. It's 2 inches across and is really fun with the little bubbles inside. It was on ebay for just ridiculously inexpensive.

There is also this one which is very pretty with the deep gold and the ivory mixing

Another Marble

This is a fantastic marble, and it was for sale on ebay.

It's been to cold to blow glass the past week. Our hotshop is in a covered surrounded deck, so it's mostly fine — protected from the rain, wind and can vent through a skylight when it gets too hot, but it doesn't protect enough
